Janet Ann Tyner

February 16, 1950 — May 17, 2015

Janet Ann Tyner, age 65, of Eben, died at her home at N5670 N. Ferguson Road in Eben (mailing address Skandia 49885) under the loving care of her family and North Woods Hospice on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 6:20 p.m. She was born on February 16, 1950 in Marquette, Michigan to Arthur and Irene (Hautamaki) Swajanen. Janet grew up on the family dairy farm in Eben and loved working the outdoor chores on the farm. She graduated valedictorian of Eben High School in 1968. Janet moved to Milwaukee and worked at the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal. She and Jack Tyner became engaged and after his tour of duty with the Army in Vietnam, they were married on August 15th and moved to Colorado Springs. When Jack's service was complete, they returned home to Eben. Janet was a homemaker and raised their four children. When raising her kids, she was always supportive, yet firm and Janet made sure they were on the right track. She also ran a business out of her home where she sewed clothing for children. Janet was a talented seamstress and not only ran her business, but taught sewing in 4-H. When her oldest son started college, she decided to join him and earned her Bachelor's Degree from Northern Michigan University. She then attained her Master's Degree in Social Work from Grand Valley State University. Janet finished all of her schooling with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. She worked as a social worker at the LMAS Health Department and then at Tendercare. Janet left her job as a social worker when her health declined.

She had an amazing faith and love of God throughout her life. Janet was a lifelong member of the Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben where she shared her musical talents for many years of Sunday services, weddings, and funerals. She also taught piano lessons at the church to many students. Janet passionately loved her grandchildren and supported them in all of their events - rain, sleet, snow or shine. Janet also loved the farm chores as an adult. She enjoyed making hay, fixing the fence, and riding the tractor. Although she loved flowers, she hated gardening and chose to buy her vegetables at the store.

Janet's life was filled with health battles that began in her teens. She endured five different cancers and treatments for all of them. During those times, she continued to work and be an integral part of her family's lives. Although Janet struggled with health, she will always be remembered for her faith, strength, love for her family, and the life she lived and enjoyed.
She is survived by her loving husband - Jack Tyner of Eben; daughter - Julie (Rob) Brigman of Harvey; sons - Jake Tyner of Eben, Joseph Tyner of Rumely, and Jed (Trudee DeKing) of Eben; six grandchildren - Teslyn, Madisyn, Brylee, Derick, Kinlee, and Charlee; her mother - Irene Swajanen of Eben; sisters - Maria (Duane) Lincoln of Munising and Kayleen (Ted) Holmstrom of Hancock; brothers - Kenneth (Lisa) Swajanen of Wetmore and Richard (JoEllen) Swajanen of Chatham; and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Janet was preceded in death by her father Art Swajanen, parents-in-law Edward and Gladys Tyner, Sr., and infant grandson Baby Jack.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 and also at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Pastor Tom Schierkolk will conduct Janet's funeral service on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m at the Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben. Interment will be at the Limestone Township Cemetery in Limestone, Michigan where she will be escorted by her three sons, brother Richard, and nephews Cary and Chad.
