Louise Smiley, age 93, of the Hiawatha Forest, died Sunday, October 16, 2022 at her home under the loving care of her family and North Woods Home Hospice. She was born on June 29, 1929 in New Harmony, Indiana to the late Calvin and Hildred (Waggoner) Cannady. Louise graduated from New Harmony High School in 1947 and then attended community college, excelling in business courses. She was a detail oriented and organized woman. Louise married Elmo L. Smiley in January of 1958 and together raised their family. They spent many years living in Highland, Indiana before moving to their home in the beautiful Upper Peninsula. Louise was a worldly woman who loved to travel with Elmo and enjoyed all the places and experiences traveling could offer. She owned and operated an antique and consignment shop in Munising - The Bay House from 1984-1990. Louise also served as the Tri-County Volunteer Fire Dept. Treasurer for over a decade while Elmo was the Fire Chief. She loved walks in the woods, word search puzzles, and was an avid reader of mystery novels.
Louise is survived by her children – Lyn (Tom) Randolph, of Portage, IN, Sandy Smiley of Wetmore, and Roger Smiley of Escanaba; grandsons – Jason (Patricia), Tyler, Joshua, and Matthew; great-granddaughter – Courtney; sister – Gail (Jerry) Zink of Asheville, NC, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents – Hildred and Calvin; husband – Elmo; infant daughter – Lisa; granddaughter – Julie; and sister – Margaret “Peg” (John) Duckworth.
