Barbara G. Carberry, age 94, of Marquette and Munising, died Saturday morning, April 24, 2021 at Medilodge in Munising after living a long and independent, productive, and satisfying life.  Born in Munising on June 8, 1926 to Elson and Madeline (Weir) Carberry.  Barbara Carberry graduated in the Class of 1944 at the Wm. G. Mather High School.  She completed Registered Nurse training from the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Bloomington, Illinois in 1949.  After working two years at the Munising Hospital, she entered into the U.S. Army Nurse Corps at as Second Lieutenant in 1951.  Her career in the Army included completing basic training at San Antonio and serving three years in Hawaii.  Barbara was honorably discharged from the Army as a First Lieutenant.

In the fall of 1957, Barbara entered the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia and completed her studies two years later.  While employed as a Nurse Anesthetist at the Minneapolis General Hospital for three years, she completed the Nursing Administration program and broadened her skills in anesthesia before being hired by the Sitka Community Hospital in Alaska as the sole anesthesia provider in 1961.  She finished an Associate Degree of Arts at the Sitka Community College.

Barbara left Sitka, Alaska and went to Chester, California for five years.  From there she moved to Kodiak, Alaska in 1971 where she remained for nineteen years serving the Island Hospital with anesthesia services and completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Hospital Management.  She spent many days relieving other nurse anesthetists who were at hospitals throughout Alaska for their time off 24-hour call.  Barbara enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and cutting wood on Kodiak Island.  In addition, she served on the Alaska Board of Nursing for five years.

Barbara moved back to Munising in 1990, after the death of her parents, and ran the Homestead Bed and Breakfast at the family home prior to selling the home and moving to Marquette in 2002.

Barbara Carberry was actively involved in the American Legion Post 44 and the American Legion Auxiliary.  She served as Post Commander and President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.  Barbara provided many services to the American Legion Post with plenty of warmth and good cheer to our veterans.

Barbara will be remembered for the hundreds of large muffins which she made and gave to her friends and neighbors to their delight.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by her parents, twin sister Priscilla Lindquist and brothers Jack Carberry and Elson Carberry.

Graveside services for Barbara will be held at the veteran’s section of the Maple Grove Cemetery on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.  Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard and committal prayers will be by Pastor Sandra Kolder.
