Boyd M. Nutting, age 86, of AuTrain, died unexpectedly at his home following a brief illness on Tuesday evening, September 15, 2026. He was born in South Bend, Indiana to Merril and Lois (Price) Nutting on September 1, 1940. Boyd grew up in South Bend and married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Martin, on March 23, 1958. Together they raised their three children. Boyd owned and operated City Glass and Radiator in Buchanen, Michigan from 1969 until 1989. For ten years, he and Sharon owned and operated Jen’s Rustic Resort in Barbeau, Michigan. In 1980, he started a charter fishing business taking the Fish Hawk out on Lake Michigan and eventually Lake Superior as their home moved west across the Upper Peninsula to the Deerton/Sand River area. In the winters, Boyd was a bass guide on Lake Okeechobee in Florida. In the summers, his Lake Superior charters out of Marquette on the Fish Hawk took his customers out to Stannard Rock and across the “Big Lake.” His “retirement” job was the best job. Boyd had a passion and love for the outdoors. In addition to fishing, he was an avid trapper and hunter of deer, pheasant, moose, and bear. Boyd enjoyed trips to Canada and enjoyed guiding bear hunters. He was also the “grill master” at every family cookout. Boyd loved traveling to his great-grandchildren’s sporting events and supporting his daughters in their coaching.
He is survived by his loving wife of over sixty-eight years – Sharon Nutting of AuTrain; son – Boyd (Julie Soales) Nutting, Jr. of Niles, Michigan; daughters – Cheryl Nutting-Moore of AuTrain and Kris Bray of AuTrain; grandchildren – Liz McGinnis, Walter (Hannah) Moore, Clayton (Hannah) Moore, Lacy (Brian) Stuer, Ally (Ethan) Bray-Barnett, and Amy Bray; and great-grandchildren – Quinn, Sawyer, Rowan, Charlotte, Olivia, Boyd, Rosalynn, Stephen, Kylie, Kennedy, and Mike. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Ky Vanderbush, and son-in-law Bruce Bray.
A celebration of life will be held at the family home in AuTrain (E2729 Hemlock Bluff Drive) on Sunday, October 4, 2026 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
