Bruce E. Gosselin, age 70, of 208 E. Varnum Street, Munising, died at 10:00 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2006 with his family surrounding him at his home. Bruce was born December 22, 1935 to Ernest "Buck"and Mary (Prato) Gosselin. He graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1954. Bruce was a proud starting member of the 1954 District and U.P. State Championship Basketball team. As a young man he enjoyed spending his winters ski jumping. He even helped in the construction of the ski jump in Brown's Addition. After graduation Bruce enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served two years and was a member of the Marine Corps Marching Band where he played the trombone. During his service, he completed a course in Atomic, Biological & Chemical Defense at Camp Pendleton, California. He was discharged as a Corporal on June 28, 1956. Bruce attended three years of college at NMU and then Business College in Green Bay. He went to work for Prudential in Watertown, WI, and on July 23, 1966, Bruce married Margaret Lemley. They lived in Watertown for one year, and while on a trip home from vacationing in Florida, they decided that they were going to move there. Bruce began employment with the First National Bank of the Upper Keys as a teller. He worked his way through the bank to eventually become the President. Along with the other businessmen in the Keys, Bruce volunteered as an E.M.T. and fireman. He was a member of the Elks Lodge where he served as an auditor for Club. Bruce enjoyed hunting in the Everglades and he loved tarpon and bone fishing in the Keys.
Bruce, Margaret, and their two daughters returned to Munising in 1978. Bruce went to work for the First National Bank which later became First of America Bank as Vice President. He became President and worked in Munising for many years. When he retired from First of America, he was the Executive Vice President and Cashier of the entire U.P. out of the headquarters in Marquette. Bruce was a member of the Grand Island Masonic Lodge, the Shiners, the Moose Lodge, American Legion, Eden Lutheran Church, and was Past President of the Munising Lions Club. He served as a City Commissioner and on the Munising Memorial Hospital Board. Bruce enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and rides in the woods with his girls. When his first grandson Bruce came along, many hours were spent going for rides in Papa's truck. He was a Michigan State Spartans and Detroit Lions fan. Bruce had a great sense of humor! He loved playing jokes and was known to "stop for all animals except Wolverines." He spent many years traveling with friends to the Kentucky Derby and the friends of his daughters and grandchildren remember the "Claw." Bruce was a glass half full person and he was always willing to help. He taught important life lessons to his girls from the way they should treat others to the way they should load the dishwasher. During his illness, he never lost his sense of humor or concern for others.
He is survived by his wife of over forty years - Margaret Gosselin of Munising; their daughters and sons-in-law - Michele and Mike Albright and Kristi and Steve Dausey all of Munising; grandchildren and step-granddaughter - Bruce, Stephanie "Stevie", and Michelene "Mickie" Dausey and Ian and Kayla Albright; his mother - Mary Gosselin of Munising; brother - Mike and Birdie Gosselin of Wyandotte, MI: mother-in-law - Evelyn (Norberg) Lemley; sister-in-law - Karen Scott; 5 nieces; 1 nephew; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
