Carol (Weber) Campbell Fitzgerald, age 88, of AuTrain, died early Tuesday morning, December 9, 2025 at the Teal Lake Assisted Living in Negaunee, Michigan following a lengthy illness. She was born on September 29, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late Donald and Florence (Buege) Weber. Carol grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from Washington High School in 1955. She went to St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Marquette and earned her Registered Nurse degree in August of 1958. Carol married Wesley C. Campbell on November 29, 1958 and raised her children while working at St. Luke’s and St. Mary’s in Marquette and St. Luke’s in Milwaukee. In 1969, the Campbell family returned to Marquette, and she went back to work at St. Luke’s and then Marquette General. The family moved to a farm in Skandia in 1972. She worked in the Obstetrics Department in Marquette for over twenty-three years. Carol became Alger County’s school nurse for ten years and then a home health nurse for LMAS for many years. She owned her own business “Happy Feet” where she provided foot care for many residents of Alger County. Carol and Wes moved to AuTrain around 1985, and he preceded Carol in death on January 4, 1996. Carol was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Moose Lodge, and Calvary Free Lutheran Church. Carol married Dean “Fitz” Fitzgerald on June 12, 1999, and they both embraced the organizing of providing military honors and graveside services for hundreds of veterans throughout Alger County through the Alger County Veterans Honor Guard. Fitz preceded Carol in death on April 21, 2016. Carol enjoyed cross country skiing, counted cross stitch, flower and vegetable gardening, knitting, and crocheting.
She is survived by daughters and son-in-law – Eileen Beck of Harvey and Betty and Jeff Bennett of North Chelmsford, MA; daughter-in-law – Cindy Campbell of Iron Mountain; granddaughters – Erica (Matt) Brege and Sara (Nick) Clements; great-grandchildren – Charlie and Marlowe; and stepsons – Jon and Phillip Fitzgerald. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Wes and Fitz, son Paul Campbell, grandson Daniel John Beck, sister Diane Backman, and stepson Adam Fitzgerald.
Services will be held at a later date and interment will be at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain.
