Dorothy L. Avery, age 93, of AuTrain, Michigan died on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 under the loving care of her family, the staff at Brookridge Assisted Living, and Lake Superior Hospice in Marquette. She was born on April 20, 1925 in Lansing, Michigan to the late Melvin and Olive (Fink) Steward. Dorothy graduated from Lansing Central High School in 1942. On April 16, 1943, she married Hoyt Avery, and together they raised their four children. They created Avery Color Studios in Saranac, Michigan in 1956. In 1969, the family and the business moved to AuTrain. Dorothy was always active with her family, a hard worker, and had a passion for sewing.
She is survived by her three children – Mary Fletcher of Muir, MI, Ron Avery of Munising, MI, and Anita (Mike) McCollum of AuTrain; grandchildren – Brian Fletcher, Lisa (Brent) Wandell, Dan (Stephanie) Fletcher, Craig (Heather) Fletcher, Tom (Shelley) Avery, Traci (Shawn) Sadler, Brandi (Phil) Beukema, Michael (Jodi) McCollum, and Becky (Jason) Cain; twenty-two great-grandchildren; sister – Ramona Griffith of Indiana; and nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents – Melvin and Olive; husband – Hoyt; son - Tom (Cathy) Avery; and son-in-law – Terry Fletcher.
Private family services will be held for Dorothy and interment will be at the AuTrain Cemetery.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out and proclaiming. “Wow what a ride!”
