Edith Lillian (DesJardins) Matson

MUNISING - Edith Lillian (DesJardins) Matson, age 80, of 710 W. Superior St., Apt. B, Munising, died Thursday evening, September 20, 2007, at her home surrounded by her family.
Edith was born February 17, 1927, in Munising to Victor and Della Rose (Westerlund) Nybeck. She grew up in the West End, attended Lincoln School and graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1945.
She married Lewis Wesley DesJardins on November 11, 1946 and the couple had 11 children. Lewis preceded her in death in January, 1977.
On September 24, 1977 she married John Charles Matson and the couple enjoyed their retirement until John's death in 1997.
Edith's legacy was in raising her large family and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cribbage and was a member of the Munising Moose Lodge and American Legion Post #131 Auxiliary.
Edith is survived by four daughters and six sons, Linda (Pat) Cotey of Munising, Pat (Ann) of Bothell WA, Judy (Scott) DesJardins of Munising, Darrell (Cathy) of Alpena MI, Duane (Brunella) of Crompond NY, Cindy (Tom) Moseley of Munising, Rod (Jan) of Munising, Tim (Dawn Marie) of Bothell WA, Terry (Ree) of Munising and Tammy (Kevin) VanLandschoot of Marquette, 19 grand children and 18 great grand children.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by an infant son in 1958 and her oldest son, Michael Lewis DesJardins, in 1983, son-in-law, Joe Cotey, in 2003, sister, Esther and 3 brothers James, Harold, and John Austin.
A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Munising on Tuesday, September 25, at 11:00am with the Rev. Gary Stevens officiating followed by interment at Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorials can be directed in Edith's name to the Alger County Humane Society.
