Edward Victor Aho

February 20, 1939 — February 2, 2023

Trenary

Trenary lost a local character on February 2, 2023. at home on the Aho family farm. Edward Victor Aho was born on February 20, 1939, the 4th of 11 children to William and Ruth (Saari) Aho in Grand Marais, Michigan. He grew up in Trenary where he graduated from high school.

Ed served in the U.S. Army from July 10, 1962 until June 22, 1964.  He spent a year in Korea at Camp Page near Chun Chon.  After his service in the Army, he attended and graduated from Northern Michigan University earning a degree in Geography.

He was a very curious child and spent many hours in the woods observing and exploring nature.  He collected moths and butterflies, old bird’s and bee’s nests and learned about the world around him.

Ed could often be found discussing local happenings and having coffee during his daily visits to the corner gas station, or attending home Superior Central Cougars sporting events in his blue and silver -- often winning the 50/50. Ed had a perennially inquisitive mind and kept up on the world around him.

Ed loved his dogs, chickens and garden and was known for his eggs, strawberries, and potatoes. He hunted, fished, trapped, and roamed the woods around the farm along the Whitefish River. Away from the farm, he worked at Holmquist Feed Mill for many years before he retired.

He was a repository of historical information, and could identify any plant, cloud formation or star in the evening sky. He was very knowledgeable of the local flora and fauna and enjoyed asking local sportsmen about their sightings and successes.

Ed was an active member of the Trenary Methodist Church and enjoyed singing hymns and participating in services.

He is survived by his siblings – Arnold Aho of Marquette, Jennie Aho of Sonoma, CA, Darlene Stone of Trenary,  Roy (Jane) Aho of Trenary, Leo (Betty) Aho of Trenary, Alvin Aho of Eben Junction, Kim Aho of Munising, and Gary Aho of Marquette; sister-in-law – Beverly Salvate of Gwinn; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Ed was preceded in death by his parents; siblings – Carl Aho and Millie Mills; in-laws – Phyllis Aho, Pam Aho, and Bob Mills.
