George Thomas Dwelley

George Thomas Dwelley, age 69, of Shingleton, died following a brief illness at his home under the loving care of his family and North Woods Hospice on Wednesday morning, August 9, 2017.  He was born in Jackson, Michigan on September 8, 1947 to the late Weldon and Anna (Williams) Dwelley.  George grew up in Jackson and moved to Yakima, WA when he was twelve.  He attended Davis High School in Yakima and in October of 1964, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam.  George returned to Jackson and married Sandra Jean Taylor on December 28, 1974.   Together they raised their three children.  George attended Montcalm Community College and earned his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice.  He went to work as a Corrections Officer for the State of Michigan at the Ionia Temporary and then Ionia Maximum Security Prisons.  When Alger Max opened, George was promoted and he and his family moved to Munising.  He retired in 2000.  After retirement, George attended the Theological Seminary School in Kinross and earned his Bachelor Degree.  He was the Pastor at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Shingleton.  In 2010, George became radio host of “George in the Morning” on WQXO 1400 AM.  He enjoyed interviewing and visiting with people.  George loved reading and studying history.  He enjoyed good food, hunting, fishing, playing chess, and talking with people.

He is survived by his wife of over forty-two years – Sandy Dwelley of Shingleton; children – Sheila (Holly Bremer) Augustus of Wausau, WI, Isaac Dwelley of Wausau, WI, and Miriam (Jason Hendrickson) Dwelley of Gwinn, MI; eight grandchildren – Kaylie, Desiree, Correna, Athena, Olivia, Ashlynn, Aden, and Ethan; multiple more children and grandchildren who George and Sandy considered their own; sister – Marcella Henderson of Cartersville, GA who says George was the oldest and ugliest and she was the youngest and prettiest; mother-in-law – Lucille Taylor of Muskegon, MI; sisters-in-law – Denise (Bill) Dooley of Muskegon and Patricia (John) Hobart of Aurora, CO; nieces and nephews – Leslie, Evette, Ricky, Randy, and Diana.  George was preceded in death by his father Weldon Dwelley, mother Anna Brewer, father-in-law – Richard “Dick” Taylor.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and also at the Munising Baptist Church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.  Pastor Dave Chambers, Pastor Ted Jolls, and Pastor Tom Schierkolk will conduct George’s funeral service on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Munising Baptist Church in Wetmore.
