George J. Stimac, age 96, of M-28, Shingleton, died on Thursday morning, September 6, 2007 at the Munising Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 17, 1911 in Star Siding to George and Mary Stimac. George attended school in Shingleton and then Wm. G. Mather High School where he played football. He worked for the South Shore Railroad and helped his father with the family gas station. George married Eunice "Toots" A. Travis on May 27, 1933. He went to work for the LS&I railroad in 1935 and retired from there in 1969. George was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Union. He enjoyed hunting, brook trout fishing, and trapping. George also loved listening to Munising Mustang and Detroit Tiger games on the radio.
He is survived by his wife of over 74 years - Eunice "Toots" Stimac of Shingleton; children - Ida (Joe) Graves of Shingleton, Ronald (Clara) Stimac of Munising, and Judy (Jim) Hill of Munising; daughter-in-law - Babe Stimac of Shingleton; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren;8 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Charles "Chuck" and Dennis "Denny" Stimac, brothers Frank, Tony, and Charles Stimac, sisters Mary Chopp and Frances Blank, and a great-great grandson.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will conduct George's funeral service in the funeral home's chapel on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising and he will be escorted by his grandsons.
