Gregory "Greg" R. Quinn

May 4, 1957 — June 6, 2024

Deerton

Gregory Russell Quinn, age 67, of Deerton, passed peacefully under the loving care of North Woods Home Hospice and with his family by his side on June 6, 2024 after a two year battle with cancer. Greg was born May 4, 1957 in Detroit, Michigan to Pauline “Polly” (Askew) and Roger Quinn. Raised in the rural town of Goodrich, Michigan where he developed a love for country life. He was in the FFA and worked horse farms while in high school and college. He graduated from Goodrich High School in 1975. He moved to the U.P. to attend Northern Michigan University and fell in love with the people and places. After college, he worked for the Marquette Parks and Recreation. In 1984, he took a job as a manager at a Conoco station in Atlanta, GA. He ran a truck stop in the airport freight yards. Quite the education in life. In 1986, he moved to Houghton, Michigan to pump gas at a full service station near the canal bridge. A few months later, he moved to Munising as the new Frito-Lay guy, where he made many friends on his route. In 1988, he hired into Kimberly Clark’s labor pool where he worked in Specialties and the Technical departments for 29.5 years until retirement.

In 1999, he married Suzette Carberry and became stepfather to Kristie and Brook. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Dayne, Hattie, and Duray, who were his everything and coined him Grandpa GA. Greg’s greatest memories with his family were the trips to the waterparks, Bay Beach, canoeing the AuTrain River, NMU Hockey games, the 12 Days of Christmas gifts, watching Dayne play football, chasing Hattie on the Cross Country courses, and showing off all of Duray’s 4H projects at the fair.
Greg was a long time member of the Lions Club, where he served as president, advised the Boy Scouts, rang the Bell at Bob’s IGA, and sold many Rubber Ducky Race tickets. He served on the original zoning board of Onota Township with honor to his friend, Toivo Maki, to keep rules off. He loved cats, breakfast at McDonald’s or the DogPatch, working in his workshop in Deerton, camping at Wide Waters and Grand Marais, and dinners at the Brownstone. He spent countless hours on Lake Superior on his 32 foot Marinette, The Two Sisters or cruising the rocks on Grand Island on his Zodiac “The Dingy”.

His artistic ability was passed down to him by his mother. His works are highly seen at Munising High School. He built 20 different shadow boxes representing each athletic accomplishment. Along with the boxes, the 1000 point and Tennis Play of Year boards, the concession stand sign, the high top tables at the football field and the Pete Heyerman Jr. memorial benches as well at the field are some of his works.
Greg is survived by daughter’s; Kristie (Rich) Cota, Brook (Derek) Murk, brother; Michael (Kimberlee) Quinn, sister; Janet (Claus) Buchholz, grandchildren; Dayne, Hattie, Duray, and nieces and nephews, Joe, Matt, Chris, Sarah, Nik, Cienna, and Chase. He was preceded in death by his parents Roger and Polly.
