Harold Bailey

Harold "Andy" Lawrence Bailey, age 81, died Friday, February 10, 2006 following a courageous battle with leukemia. Harold was born on February 16, 1924 in Nahma, Michigan, the son of Harry Asil and Mary Louise Bailey. His family moved to Grand Marais when he was just a small child. Harold worked in the CCC Camp in the 40's and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. On November 15, 1948 he was united in marriage to Geraldine Hughes in Detroit. In 1951, Harold and Gerrie moved to Ithaca, Michigan where they raised five children together. He was very proud of his family. Harold worked for Wolverine World Wide as personnel manager. While living in Ithaca he was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion. He served on the city council for many years and also worked part time filing saws. He and his wife returned to his hometown of Grand Marais after retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Harold always took part in the Memorial Day services. He felt very strongly that it was his duty as a former soldier. During his retirement he enjoyed fishing, collecting die cast automobiles and miniature lighthouses. He also enjoyed talking to people, visiting with old friends, spending time going to the marina and checking out the boats that arrived daily. During the winter months, he and his wife enjoyed the warmth of Florida.
He leaves his wife Gerrie; five children - George H. (Suzzanne ) Bailey of Ithaca, Bruce (Carlene) of Alma, MI, James R. of Loveland, CO, Margaret E. (Gregory) Smith of Ithaca, and Evelyn L. (John) Morrison of Grand Marais, 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers - Yale (Laura) Bailey of Highland, IN, David Bruce (Pat) of Hammond, IN, William Bailey of Grand Marais, and David (Helen)Bailey of Grand Marais; sister Millie LaFraniere of Ithaca; also several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Mary Louise Bailey and sisters Leone Thomas and Norma St. Martin. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Ithaca on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. Locally, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 3, 2006 at 12:00 noon at St. Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais. Interment will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais where the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
