Harold E. Groom, age 81, of Wood's Edge Drive, Wetmore, died on Good Friday morning, April 6, 2007 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette following a two year illness. He was born on September 25, 1925 in Canton, Ohio to the late Emerson and Velma (Snyder) Groom. Harold enlisted into the U.S. Navy on October 6, 1942. He served on the USS Doran and USS Jeffers. Harold earned the American Campaign, European Middle Eastern Campaign, and WWII Victory Medals. Following the service he married Irene Carpenter on May 5, 1946. They were married over forty-four years when she preceded him in death on October 10, 1990. Harold worked in the aeronautic field as a machinist for Northrup Grumman for many years. After his retirement in 1989, he and Irene moved to the Munising area from New York. Harold was a member of United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, Grand Island Masonic Lodge, and the American Legion. On October 3, 1992, Harold married Vi (Margeson) Cota. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling with Vi, hunting camp with the boys, cribbage, and dominos. He had especially enjoyed the memories with family at Ostrander Lake.
Harold is survived by his wife of over fourteen years - Vi Groom of Wetmore; children - John (Donna) Groom of Marietta, SC, Bob Groom of Winter Springs, FL, and Kathleen (Marc) Dulsky of Winter Springs, FL; step-children - Kip (Jan) Cota of Wetmore, Bill (Nan) Cota of Shingleton, Rick (Donna Kurth) Cota of Wetmore, and Theresa Cota of Munising; numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren; brothers - Roy Groom of New Philadelphia, OH and Tom (Joyce) Groom of North Canton, OH; sister - Shirley Caldwell of North Canton, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene, daughter Irene, stepson Bruce Cota, and brothers Paul and Richard Groom.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00. A Masonic service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Harold's funeral will be officiated by Pastor Gary Stevens of the Methodist Church on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home's chapel. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery where the Alger County Veterans and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Honorary escorts will be his grandchildren
