Harold Andrew Stone, age 94, of Munising, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, September 15, 2025. “Stoney” was a local legend. He was born in the sauna in Trenary on July 14, 1931 to Andrew and Jenny (Rautanen) Stone. Stoney graduated from Munising in 1951. He had a voracious gift to gab and would “chew the fat” wherever he went. Everyone he met was his friend. Harold worked at Kimberly Clark for over thirty-four years and retired as an oiler, which was his favorite job because he could visit while working. He had a great love of the outdoors where he hiked, snowmobiled, cross-country skied, fished, camped, and hunted. His favorite trip was to cross country ski to Grand Island and the trapper shack. Harold passed down his love for the outdoors to his daughters and grandchildren. He did bag a few bucks but mostly liked walking in the woods telling stories along the way and scaring all wildlife. He lived life to the fullest and every day was an adventure. His kids, grandkids, and friends laugh at how lucky they were to survive some of the adventures with Stoney. Even in his 80’s he would brush a trail off the Ridge Road to the Congo Creek, loaded with his hatchet, pistol, and dog Jack. There were times when he was gone all day and when he told you where he was going….he was probably somewhere else. Stoney was famous for short cuts and often was turned around to explore new country while waiting for Search and Rescue to find him. The woods was his happy place. Harold was also a great wheeler dealer. When his daughters were young, they had the pleasure of driving something different every two weeks. At one time, the Secretary of State’s office told him if he kept it up, he would need a dealer’s license. Stoney had love of old cars, Harley’s, and doing auto body and painting cars for people. He never made a profit from it, he just loved doing the work. He taught the love of cars to his girls. Harold was an open book. If something didn’t sit well, he would let it be known. An example is when he lived on Ridge Road, a dirt bike rode by too fast and he ran out and tried catching the bike and carried a big stick. Stoney had a rough childhood with his speech impairment, but he was a happy go lucky fella who loved his family and Bondo. He outlived most of his friends and schoolmates and that was hard on him.
Harold is survived by his wife of forty-four years – Margaret “Cookie” (Witty) Stone (he always told everyone that he loved all three of his wives, which he did); children – David (Patty) Martin, Kristine (Gregory) Lindquist, Marsha Morrison, and Kim (Rick) Simon; grandchildren – Chad (Jennifer) Morrison, Tiffany (Isaiah) Holloway, Shannon (Pete) Feutz. Great Grandchildren-Blaise Morrison, Drake Morrison, Ember Morrison, Alyssia (Josh) Gurski, Katie Martin, Ian Simon, and Quinn Simon; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers – Wayne (JoAnn) Fleming and Tom Fleming; sister – Wanda Faucette: sister-in-law – Pat (Jim) Corriveau; and numerous nieces and nephews,
And his very best friend Elmer. He was preceded in death by his father Andrew Stone, mother Jennie Fleming, brother Larry Stone; son-in-law Tommy Morrison, and in-laws Mary Jane Fowler, Clifford Witty, Sr., and Jack Witty.
