John E. Lokar, age 90, of 222 S. Fifth Street, Marquette, and longtime Shelter Bay resident, died at his home at Snowberry Heights on Saturday morning June 10, 2006. He was born on April 17, 1916 in Calumet, Michigan to Joseph and Agnes (Glaesner) Lokar. John graduated from Calumet High and moved to Detroit in 1936 where he worked for the Ford Motor Company as a millwright. In 1944, John married Bertha Florence Hill. They were married over fifty-one years when she preceded him in death. In 1955, John and Bertha moved to Shelter Bay. He began working for Kimberly Clark on September 14, 1955 as a second millwright in the engineering department. John then moved to first millwright then general millwright. He retired on April 18, 1978 with twenty-three years of service. John and Florence owned and operated the Shelter Bay Motel for 25 years.
John is survived by his son - Gary Lokar; daughters - Ann and Robert Gephart and Jane Lokar; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; close friend - Bertha Elo; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Florence; brothers Rudy, Joseph, Fred, Frank, and Ralph; and sisters - Agnes and Josephine.
A graveside service will be conducted at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham on July 14, 2006 at 4:30. A memorial reception will follow the service at the Grand Island Room of Sydney's restaurant in Munising, beginning at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of John may be directed to U.P. Home Health & Hospice, 1414 Fair Avenue, Marquette, Michigan 49855.
