Munising

June Nettleton, age 94, of Munising, died peacefully on Sunday afternoon, September 15, 2019.  She was born in Munising on October 3, 1924 to Francis and Bertha (Ketchum) Morrison.  June was raised in Seney and graduated as salutatorian from Grand Marais High School.  During WWII, she worked as a telephone operator in the Lansing area.  June married Donald “Blink” Nettleton on April 29, 1945 and together raised their family in Brown’s Addition and then on Connors Road.  June worked hard and volunteered harder throughout her life.  She would say, “It is just as easy to lead as it is to follow.”  June served as the Munising Township Clerk for many years.  She was an active and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church where June taught Sunday school for many years and served as the Sunday School Superintendent, and she served on the church council and as an Elder.  June was a life member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron.  June was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary and served as the local Commander and State Commander from 1982-1983.  She and Blink were awarded the Mustang Booster of the Year in 1971-1972.  June was recognized by her volunteerism with many awards and in 1998, she was enrolled in the Alger County Women of Honor.  June volunteered for the Wetmore Community Club, Commission on Aging, the Alger Marquette Senior Nutrition Program and served on their council, the Alger Community Action Board, and she worked with Hub for the March of Dimes.  Education was important to her and giving of herself as a volunteer was important to her.  June enjoyed being with children and especially treasured time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She and her sister “Shorty” Roberts spent a lot of precious time together.  June also enjoyed blueberry picking and going on picnics.

She is survived by her children – Sharon Hoffman of Munising, Donna (Donald) Marbes of Menominee, Darlene Nettleton-Casey of Menominee, Mike (Sue) Nettleton of Munising, Beverly Nettleton of Menominee, Tom (Linda) Nettleton of Menominee, Kelley (Greg) Schulz of Oscoda, MI, and Tony (Michael Ann) Nettleton of Cooks; grandchildren – Bryann, Justin, Melissa, James, Michael, Steven, Craig, Jennifer, Theresa, Chris, Carrie, and Katie; twenty-three great-grandchildren; brother – David (Sally) Morrison of Seney; and numerous nieces and nephews.
