Grand Marais

Karen A. Brzys, a.k.a. The Agatelady, age 72, of Grand Marais, died following an accident at her home on Friday, May 29, 2026. She was born on January 17, 1954, in Detroit to Earl and Beatrice (Kane) Penegor. Karen grew up in Redford Township and graduated from Redford Union High School in 1972. Throughout her childhood, her summers were spent on the south shore of Lake Superior in Grand Marais. She enjoyed most of her evenings in Grand Marais at the Gitchee Gumee Museum as a “groupie” and helper to the museum owner. It was there that Karen developed a dynamic appreciation for the natural world and experienced the counterbalance to offset the school year in the busy suburbs of Detroit. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degree from the University of Michigan, where she made some lifetime friends. Karen married Daniel Brzys and together had two sons, Kevin and Jonathan. Karen had a diverse and extensive career in academia and Corporate America that allowed her to travel over a million miles across the globe. In 1994, she made Grand Marais her permanent home and transitioned the Dune Saloon to the Lake Superior Brewing Company. Karen then purchased and renovated the Gitchee Gumee Museum and on July 4, 1999, the museum reopened after being closed since 1978. Karen described herself as a mineral artist and writer/designer. Her passion for collecting agates culminated with the establishment of a new line of agate items and her artistic talents gleamed. Karen authored many books and her newest “Agates and Their Story,” will be released on June 18th this year. Karen was a loving and dedicated mom who worked hard throughout her life. Her love of nature and science has been passed down to many. She enjoyed hiking (Grand Canyon almost 20 times), snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, rockhounding, golf, spending time with friends and playing cards, especially cribbage. Her favorite music was oldies, and her favorite book was “anything that makes you think.”

She is survived by her two sons – Kevin (Jericho Michels) Brzys of Middleton, WI and Jonathan (Jessica) Brzys of South Lyon, MI, two grandchildren – Keenen and Aili; siblings – Diana, Sharon, Sandy, and Doug; and numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends that will miss her dearly. Karen was preceded in death by her parents.

A celebration of Karen’s life is being planned by the family, and the date will be announced in the near future.
