Shingleton

Kathy Gene Smith, age 63, of Shingleton, Michigan died on Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 12, 1952 in Pontiac, Michigan to John and Phyllis (Hovinen) Bellant. Kathy graduated from Clarkston High School in 1970. She married Matthew Mark Smith on May 20, 1972. Kathy worked a number of different jobs. She worked as a Michigan Bell operator, a manager of a downstate Wendy's, at the Kewadin Casino, and at the Shannon House with Adult Learning Systems here in the U.P. When Kathy and Matt moved back to Shingleton, she became very involved in helping set up community activities. She headed up youth activities and luncheons in the Shingleton community and was always available to serve. She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, riding in the woods in the fall, and spending time with friends and family... the more, the merrier. Kathy loved being with the Pictured Rocks Catchum n Stretchum Bear Hunting Club, whether in the woods, or at the group gatherings, or at the U.P. Bear Houndsman Association banquets. She was a fun loving woman who always wanted to help others.

She is survived by her husband of forty-three years - Matt Smith of Shingleton; son - Paul (Catherine) Smith of Munising; daughter - Karen Smith of Shingleton; grandchildren - Brandon and Jayme Nelson, Lindsey Woller, and Jill (Brett) Bednarski; mother - Phyllis Bellant; sister - Terry (Roger) Dengate; brothers - Michael (Linda), Gerald (Kathy), and Kevin (Patty) Bellant; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kathy was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Alicia Smith and father John Bellant.

A memorial service will be held at the Christ Lutheran Church in Shingleton on Sunday, June 28, 2015. Sunday worship starts at 9:30 a.m. and Kathy's memorial service will immediately follow.
