Obituary

Leigh Cowen passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 83 years old.

Leigh and his late wife, Karen Brown (1956-2025), lived near Chapel Falls, close to the wild edge of the Pictured Rocks lakeshore. They loved their home, the woods, their beloved dogs, the sound of wind moving through the trees, and the company of visiting family, friends, and neighbors.

Leigh was well known throughout Munising and Alger County as he often ventured beyond Chapel Rd. to substitute teach, play piano gigs, and work at the Historical Society. His dry wit, humor, warmth, and musical talent made him a welcome presence wherever he went.

Leigh and Karen discovered Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the early 1990s while escaping the pressures of urban life in Milwaukee. They were inspired by the quiet beauty of the forests and lakeshore and the peace it gave them. They soon realized that they had found their true home and made the permanent move to Chapel Road more than thirty years ago.

Leigh's life passion was music. He was a world-class jazz pianist (see links below), playing concerts at Milwaukee’s finest clubs, art centers, and with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of well-known duos, trios, and the avant-garde jazz band What on Earth! Even after moving north, he managed to fit his baby grand into his cozy Chapel Road home, allowing him to share his gift with frequent visitors. He also shared his inspired music throughout the UP through his gigs at restaurants, weddings, and hotels.

Leigh was a loving father to Stephen and Ryan Cowen who were with him the day he passed. His sons carry forward the memories of his music, his fierce independence, and his quick, witty, and iconoclastic mind. Leigh will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

Leigh was the son of Howard “Howie” Cowen and Laverne “Vernie” Haggerty, and is survived by his two grandchildren, Courtney and Connor, his brother, Keith, sister, Lynne, and his two sons.
