Obituary

Lisa Alice Smale, age 59, of Christmas, passed away unexpectedly with her husband at her side on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in Skandia, Michigan. She was born on July 22, 1966, in Escanaba, where she was raised. Lisa graduated from Escanaba High School in 1984. She raised her two sons and worked at State Farm Insurance in Escanaba, where she met the love of her life, Lloyd Smale. They were married on February 15, 2008, and made their home together in Christmas. Lisa later worked in the billing department at Munising Memorial Hospital for over 20 years where she made many close friends.

Lisa found joy in the outdoors and especially loved hiking throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Some of her favorite memories were made traveling and sharing new adventures with her two sons. She was a devoted Detroit Lions fan who rarely missed a game, whether cheering from Ford Field or watching from home. Her impressive collection of Lions memorabilia reflected her lifelong passion for the team. She adored her two chocolate Labs, Elmer and Luke, but above all, she cherished being “Nana.” Her grandchildren were the center of her world, and she treasured every moment she spent with them.

Lisa is survived by her husband of over eighteen years, Lloyd Smale of Christmas; her sons and daughters-in-law, Ryan and Fallon Borchert of Sacramento, California, and Jordan and Maranda Borchert of Livonia, Michigan; her stepsons, Randy Wymer of Munising and Billy Smale of Christmas; her grandchildren, Otto, Faith, Shane, Kalin, and baby S.J., due in August; her great-grandson, Archer; her siblings, Claudia, Sue, Michelle, Terri, Jeff, and David; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, dear friends, and in-laws; and her best friend, Tia.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Gillmet; her grandson, Ryan; and her siblings, Jeanette and Bobby.

Private family services will be held. Lisa’s obituary and online guestbook may be found at bowermanfuneralhome.net
