Margaret Niemi, age 79, of the Whispering Pines Home in Chatham and formerly of Rumely, died following a brief illness on Saturday morning, May 20, 2006 at the Marquette General Hospital. She was born on December 23, 1926 in Gwinn, Michigan to Jacob and Lisa (Ammesmaki) Haapasaari. Margaret married George Walfred Niemi on September 30, 1944 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Marquette. They were married over fifty-three years when George preceded her in death on January 1, 1997. Margaret was a dedicated worker and friend of Dr. Don Fahrbach and Dr. Walter Olson for forty years at the Munising Medical Center. She was a member of the Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben, and Margaret enjoyed snowmobiling and skiing in her younger years. She also enjoyed cooking and working puzzle books.
She is survived by brothers - Frank Haapasaari of Vermont and Leo (Joanne) Haapasaari of Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews; her family at Whispering Pines - Pam and Tom Gould of Chatham; and her dear friend - Eugene Koski of Chatham. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, brothers Onnie, George, and Urho Haapasaari, and sister Ellen Moldowan.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at the Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben Junction on Tuesday, May 23, 2006. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Pastor Thomas Schierkolk will conduct Margaret's service at noon. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.
