Mark Richard Barney

Mark Richard Barney, age 73, of M-77 Grand Marais, died at 11:55 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2006 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on July 13, 1932 in Grand Marais to the late Ray and Edith (Trombley) Barney. Mark graduated from Grand Marais High School in 1950. He married Adele Mary Ann Mulligan on April 1, 1952. Mark joined the U.S. Navy in the early 1950's and served for four years. He continued his military career in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired after twenty years of service as a radioman. Mark briefly worked offshore for N.O.A.A. following his retirement. He and Adele returned home to Grand Marais. Mark was a member of the Holy Rosary Church and he enjoyed hunting small game and loved playing the piano. He enjoyed dogs (especially Sparky and Nick), spending time on the computer, and Mark especially enjoyed taking long rides in the woods with Adele.
He is survived by his wife of over fifty-four years - Adele Barney of Grand Marais; four children - Mark "Butch" Barney of Ishpeming, Gary (Kathi) Barney of Gwinn, John Barney, and Cindy (Dennis) Elliott of Marquette; six grandchildren - Penny Barney, Brooke (Ryan) Whaley, Brenna (Jason) LaBeau, Trisha (Steve) Dodge, Elsbeth (Jason) Heyboer, and Chase Elliott; three great-grandchildren - Paige, Blaine, and Dillan; sister - Edith Miller of Rockford, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Paul Karottekunnel on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais. Interment will be at a later date at the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais.
