Mary Jean Humphrey

            Mary Jean Humphrey, age 77, of Gwinn and formerly of Munising, died under the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice at her home in Gwinn on Monday morning, January 29, 2024.   She was born on May 3, 1946 in Munising into the large family of the late Robert and Nellie (Tyner) Tongusi.   Mary Jean went to Sacred Heart School and Wm. G. Mather High School.  She was a hard-working mom to Bernie and Tina.  Mary Jean worked at Weiland’s, the Alger Falls Motel, and the Kewadin Casino.   She married Dennis Harley Humphrey and he preceded her in death on May 14, 2010.  Mary Jean was creative and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and crafts.  She was a good cook and baker.  Mary Jean loved having her grandkids and great grandkids surround her and enjoyed sleepovers, camping, and playing board games with them.

            She is survived by her children – Bernie (Nicky) Humphrey of Munising and Tina (Glen) Jacobson of Gwinn; grandchildren – Courtney, Travis, Trevor, Jordan, Jessica, Nathan, Miranda, Brianna, and Glen, Jr.; ten great-grandchildren; siblings – Shirley Johnson, Darlene (Steve) Richardson, Charles “Chuck” Tongusi, Terry Tongusi, and Jake Tongusi; and numerous nieces and nephews.

            Mary Jean was preceded in death by her parents – Robert and Nellie, husband – Dennis, and siblings – Donna Reimer, Robert Tongusi, Joe Tongusi, Pat McQuisten, and three infant brothers.  

            A memorial service will be held at a later date.
