Mary L. (Moore) Shepley, 71, of AuTrain, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on October 12, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a family who loved her dearly.
Born on May 29, 1955, Mary was raised in AuTrain, Michigan, a community that remained an important part of her life. She attended William G. Mather High School, graduating in 1974. On August 18, 1973, she married Andrew E. Shepley, beginning a loving partnership that spanned more than 53 years.
Mary devoted much of her life to raising her children and caring for her family while Andrew worked as an over-the-road truck driver. She also supported the family business, Shepley Transport, serving as its bookkeeper. Throughout the years, Mary worked at several local businesses and lovingly cared for her great-niece and great-nephew, who held a special place in her life.
Mary was a devoted member of St. Therese Catholic Church in AuTrain, where she was actively involved in parish life for many years. She served as president and treasurer of the Altar Society, coordinated church bazaars, and helped clean and decorate the church. Her dedication reflected the importance of faith, family, and community throughout her life.
Mary found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially those shared with the people she loved. She enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren, baking sweet treats for family and friends, picking blueberries, playing cards, reading, and adding to her movie collection. She loved feeding the wildlife, listening to Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson, spending time at the beach, and enjoying lunches with friends. Family cookouts and evenings gathered around a bonfire were among the many ways she brought loved ones together. Mary also treasured traveling south with Andrew during the winter months.
A longtime family tradition was gathering to play the card game Peanuts. Over the years, countless hours were filled with laughter, playful heckling, and good-natured excuses for losing—whether it was needing an eye exam, poor lighting, or someone not shuffling the cards enough. Mary was the anchor of these gatherings, and rarely was a game played without her. The laughter, friendly competition, and memories made around that card table will be treasured for years to come.
Above all, Mary’s greatest joy was her family. The love she shared with her husband, children, and grandchildren will remain a treasured part of her legacy.
Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Andrew E. Shepley; her children, Deborah (Justin) Zandan, Jamie (Joseph) Skorupski, Andrew Shepley, and Frances (Luke) Gray; and her grandchildren, Alexander Shepley, Ellanor Shepley, Victoria Zandan, and Jack Zandan. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Muriel Moore, Jane Makela, and Mary (Bruce) Ruska; her stepsister, Judith Rautanen; her stepsister-in-law, Kris (McCollum) Hardee; her stepbrother-in-law, Jeff Moore; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Michelle Shepley; her parents, Donald Moore and Ellen (McCollum) Moore; her stepmother, Elmira (McCollum) Moore; her sister, Frances Moore; her brothers, Edward Moore, William Moore, Bruce Moore, and Ralph Moore; her stepsisters, Ann Clapp and Connie Moore; her stepbrothers, Mark McCollum and Thomas McCollum; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lorraine Gannon and Earl Shepley; her brother-in-law, Lloyd Makela; her sisters-in-law, Leta Shepley and Shirley Moore; and her stepbrother-in-law, William Rautanen.
Mary will be remembered for the love she gave, the memories she created, and the many ways she made life special for those around her. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the love she shared will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Services will be held at St. Therese Mission in AuTrain on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Father Prijo Joseph will celebrate Mary’s Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain and a fellowship gathering and luncheon will take place at the parish hall after the graveside prayers.
