Michael "Mike" Iho

Trenary

Michael Jack Iho, age 74, of Trenary, died Saturday, September 25 at Lakeview assisted living in Gladstone after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born on July 18, 1951 in Marquette Michigan to the late Elmer and Miriam (Maki). Mike grew up on the family farm at Winter’s Corner and lived within mile radius his entire life. He graduated from Trenary High School in 1969. Mike had a lot of on the job training and learned at the school of hard knocks, as he often said. He enlisted in the US Navy from 1969 to 1973. Mike served on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War as a radioman petty officer, third class. He returned to Trenary and married Treasa Howard in 1975 where they raised their two children, Alan and Carrie. Mike was a hard-working farmer and ran a successful business, raising dairy, beef, sheep, and making cheese for many years. He later focused on growing crops and custom work for other farmers. Mike was always doing something productive, from cutting firewood to making maple syrup. Mike built his own Homestead with the help of many great friends. Most of his mornings would start with a “walk about” the block 3 miles around the property and ended many evenings in the sauna. He enjoyed turning wood bowls and sitting on his porch, watching the hummingbirds put on a show. Mike loved hunting deer, geese, and turkey on his property. He was a talented gardener, canning his harvest and sharing the bounty. He was proud to enjoy the fruits of his labor that he raised and grew himself. Mike was a strong-willed Finlander with a giving and soft heart.

Mike is survived by his son, Alan Iho of Trenary; daughter, Carrie Yandl of Newaygo; Grandchildren, Grace and Jack Yandl; siblings Mae Iho, Paula Hawley, Catherine (Larry) Hoenig, John (Rosanne) Iho, and Mary Iho; and nieces and nephews Paige, Kyle, Sarah, and David. He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother-in-law John Hawley. Mike wanted there to be a party to celebrate his life to be held at a later date in the spring or early summer.

In lieu of flowers and a funeral, an agricultural scholarship will be made in his memory at the Superior Central School.
