Nicholas “Nick” J. Matzen, age 61, of Munising, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 6, 2026 at UPHS Marquette. Nick was born on December 24, 1964 at the KI Sawyer Air Force Base in Gwinn, Michigan. Nick found his greats joys in simple pleasures. He loved fishing in quiet waters, camping under the open skies, riding backroads with his wife Sue and dog Ashley, cutting and burning firewood, and gathering around bonfires with people he loved in his cut off flannel shirts and well-worn Harley boots. Nick lived comfortably and authentically. He was happiest when life slowed down and his passion for family and friends was unmatchable. Nick had a smile and a nod that could light up a room when he entered. Nick was working at the AuTrain Grocery, and he loved his job and the people he worked with. Nick was widowed by his wife, Brenda Latvala Matzen in 2000. He found love again when he started dating Sue (Moore) Trombly. They were a great pair that were honest and down to earth with each other, they both respected each other, they were great friends that loved each other.
Nick is survived by his wife – Sue Trombly-Matzen of Munising; daughters – Nikki Matzen and Faith Matzen; grandchildren – Hunter, Ariana, Serena, and Benjamin; stepsons – Frank, Adam, and Eric Trombly; siblings – Debra Shepley, Wayne (Shelly) Hebert, Lee (Jill) Matzen, and Rachel (Patrick) Siegle; nieces and nephews – Angel (who was “his girl”), Jim, Pete, Kailee, Danielle, Matthew, Santana (Travis), Daniel, Jordan (Jordan), and Kasey (Kara); stepfather – Jerry Hill; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Nick was preceded in death by his mother – Vivian Shepley, grandmother – Winnie Shepley, wife – Brenda Matzen, and brother-in-law Jerry Moore along with other family members who met him at the Lord’s gate with arms wide open with angel wings.
Revelations 21:4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
