Grand Marais
Randy S. Cain, age 66, of Grand Marais, Michigan and formerly of Lafayette, Indiana died unexpectedly, Sunday, October 9, 2022. He was born on March 24, 1956 in Lafayette, IN to Roger and Norma (Capper) Cain. Randy graduated from Harrison High School in Lafayette in 1974 where he participated in wrestling and swimming. He entered into the U.S. Navy in 1974. Randy was stationed out of Norfolk, VA aboard the USS Independence (CV-62) where he served as a Torpedoman’s Mate Seaman Apprentice and was honorably discharged in 1976. He married Kelly Mattox and together they raised their daughter Megan. Randy worked for Eli Lilly for over 30 years retiring in 2007 as a Senior Chemical Operator. While working at Lilly Randy met and then married Cynthia Smith-Fidler on October 22, 1996. Randy enjoyed riding ATV’s and his Harley, and going to concerts, especially Pink Floyd and Van Halen. Randy was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hiking in the Porcupine Mountains, camping, cooking over a fire, and inner tubing on the Tippecanoe River. Randy and Cindy enjoyed traveling to the UP and fell in love with Grand Marais. They worked hard for many years building their log cabin enjoying they beautiful UP summers and would winter in Tennessee and Arizona.
Randy is survived by his wife of twenty-six years – Cindy Cain of Grand Marais; children – Megan (Josh) Phillips of Stanford, IL, Kevin (Jeanna) Fidler of Lafayette, Jennifer (Suk) Chang of Phoenix, AZ, and Keith (Rachael) Fidler of Lafayette; grandchildren – Ryan Joe, Mackenzie, Aubrey, Austin, Kyleigh, Madison, Clayton, Austin, Jackie, and Mercedez; numerous great-grandchildren; father – Roger Cain; brothers – Rick (Susie) Cain, Rob Cain, and Jeff (Sandy) Cain; brother and sister-in-law – Steven Smith and Gayla Michelin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Norma Cain.
A graveside service with military honors will be on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the IOOF Memorial Gardens in Pittsburgh, IN. A memorial gathering will follow at the Riley Cabin in Riley Park in Delphi. Memorials in Randy’s name may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.).
