Stella Sophia (Woodaz) Cabanaw

Munising

Stella Sophia Cabanaw, age 89, of Munising, died Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Medilodge of Munising.  She was born in Munising on October 3, 1928 to the late Jacob and Anna (Kaplan) Woodaz. Stella grew up working on her family farm.  She married William Lawrence Cabanaw on August 28, 1948 and together they raised their four children.  Work brought the family downstate where they lived in Taylor and Lincoln Park, Michigan.  In 1975, they moved back U.P.  Stella began working at Hub’s Super Valu in the bakery until she retired in 1993.  She enjoyed camping, four-wheeling, trips to the casino, traveling to Branson and around the U.S.  Stella also enjoyed bowling for many years on the Hayes’ Drug Store team.  Stella loved caring for her flower garden and her grandchildren. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Polish Fun and Dance Club.

She is survived by her children – William (Carol) Cabanaw, Sr., Russell “Buzz” Cabanaw of Norway, MI, Mark (Mary Alice) Cabanaw of Munising, and Cecile (Jim) Frost of Wetmore; grandchildren – William Cabanaw, Jr., Michelle  Cabanaw, Robert (Danielle) Cabanaw, Chelsea (Cole) Thoreson, Kristal (Derek) Popour, Megan (Kevin) Denton, Kasey Jeffries, Alex Jeffries, and Zachary Jeffries; great-grandchildren – William, Brent, Hayla, Trevor, Aydin, Abby, Carter, Caden, Cameron, Stella, Cooper, and Alice; and sister – Helen Rzanca. Stella was preceded in death by her parents – Jacob and Anna; husband – Bill; siblings – John (Pat) Woodaz, Cecilia Woodaz, Theodore “Tage” (Betty) Woodaz, Mary (John) Kordish, Bruno Woodaz, and Bernice Woodaz; brother-in-law – August “Red” Rzanca; and mother-in-law – Freda Lewis.

Visitation will be at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Monday, February 19, 2018 from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m.   A time for sharing will take place at the end of visiting time at the funeral home.  Fr. Chris Gardiner will celebrate Stella’s Memorial Mass at Sacred Heart Church at 12:00 noon, following Mass there will be a fellowship gathering in LaMothe Hall.  Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 11:15 a.m.
