Terrence “Terry” L. Meyer, age 75, of Eben and formerly of Metamora, IL and Ft. Walton Beach, FL went to sleep on earth and woke up in heaven at his home in Eben on Sunday evening, September 25, 2016 following a three-year illness. Terry was born on June 12, 1941 in Chicago, IL to Kenneth and Arlene (Frobish) Meyer. He entered into the U.S. Navy after his uncle, the local Navy Recruiter, signed him up in 1958. Terry’s job was refueling ships aboard the USS Hassayampa. He also transported wounded soldiers from Vietnam to Hawaii during his three tours in Vietnam. Terry spent time on the USS Granville, USS Petrel, and USS Platte sailing all over the world from Vietnam, Philippines, Africa, and up and down the United States East and West Coasts. He was honorably discharged in 1974 after fifteen years of service as a Signalman – Petty Officer Second Class and was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device. Terry worked for Caterpillar in Metamora for many years. He then worked construction in the Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach areas. It was there where he met Pat (Johns) Ely and they began their life together. They raised their daughter together and moved to the Eben area in the late 1990s. Terry was a lifetime member of the AMVETS and V.F.W. He loved to fish, play darts and pool in leagues, and he enjoyed reading Louis L’Amour books.
Terry is survived by Pat Ely of Eben Junction; his five children – Terri Lynn (Robert) McDonald of Macomb, MI, Thomas (Jamie) Meyer of Franksville, WI, Tamiko Meyer of Westlake, MI, Tami (Albert) Mogul of Oswego, IL, and Tricia Meyer of Rotonda West, FL; step-son – Gene Ely of Munising; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother – Arlene Steiner of Louisville, KY; siblings – Kenneth “Sonny” (Barbara) Meyer of Shelby Township, MI, Marianne (Rick) Pickard of Louisville, KY, George (Chris) Steiner of Louisville, KY, and Sherry (Dale) Lindee of Metamora, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Terry was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Meyer and numerous aunts and uncles.
Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial on Veterans Drive of the Binsfeld Bayshore Park in Munising.
