William G. "Buck" Carr, age 82, of 200 W. City Park Drive, Munising, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, October 26, 2007. He was born on December 13, 1924 in a lumber camp near Newberry to William and Katie (Rought) Carr. Buck and his family moved to Munising while he was in the first grade. He served in the U.S. Army from March 18, 1943 until October 18, 1945. Buck served in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre. He was wounded in action on March 15, 1945 in Kalenborn, Germany. Buck participated in battles and campaigns at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes. He earned the EAME Theatre Ribbon, five Bronze Campaign Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge, the Purple Heart, and the Good Conduct Medal. Following the War, Buck returned to the Munising area. In 1949, he moved to the New Boston area. He had worked in a steel mill in Trenton, and in 1967, returned to Munising. Buck retired from Timber Products. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. Buck had married Mildred Lucille "Slivers" Harris in 1948. Although they legally separated in 1970, they continued to remain lifelong friends and together continued to share and be a part of their children's and grandchildren's lives. Buck enjoyed his family and making homemade peanut butter fudge. A plate of goodies was given every year to each family member at Christmas. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and camping.
Buck is survived by his four children - David Carr of Belleville, William "Bill" Carr of Negaunee, Kathy Carr of Marquette, and Terry (Dennis) Munger of Munising; ten grandchildren - David, Steven, Michael, Wendy, Danielle, Nicole, Tonia, Linsy, Holly, and Jeremy; ten great-grandchildren; sister - Frances Walk of Caro, MI; two nephews and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters, and Lucille.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Pastor Scott Britton will conduct Buck's funeral service on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
