Gooseneck Lake
William C. “Bill” Chartier, age 69, of Gooseneck Lake, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at his home with loving family at his side. He was born in Manistique, Michigan to the late William M. and Marjory Pauline (Kokesh) Chartier on July 20, 1956. While Bill was in high school, he worked at the airport so that he could pay for enough flight time to earn his pilots license at 16 years old. After graduating from Manistique High School in 1974, Bill went to Traverse City for training to work on the ore boats. He started with Inland Steel Company and then worked for many years at American Steamship Company retiring as a wheelman. Bill made many friends sailing the Great Lakes aboard the ships: Buffalo, St. Clair, American Mariner, Richard Reiss, and many more. Bill married Kimberly Jackson on December 3, 1983 and together they raised their two children. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He looked forward to deer season and loved camping across the U.P. with Kim. Bill also loved cruising around Gooseneck on their pontoon and taking rides in the woods, that often brought him to his son’s house, and if Billy wasn’t there he still went in to play with the dogs.
Bill is survived by his wife – Kimberly Ann Chartier; daughter – Theresa Marie Chartier; son – William Russell Chartier; siblings – Barb (Lamar) Pipkin, Gail (Paul) Sobieski, and Jackie Severin; brother and sisters-in-law – Russell Jackson, Ann (Buster) Grunwell, and Mary Jane (Gary) Kagarise; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents - William and Pauline Chartier; sister – Becky Chartier; brother-in-law – David Severin; and sister-in-law – Arbor Volz.
