Munising

Arthur "Art" Hagerty, a loving husband, dedicated father, and WWII veteran, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, May 3, 2023 at the Munising Memorial Hospital at the age of 102.  He was born on June 10, 1920 in Bristol, IN and raised there. During WWII, Art bravely served in the US Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.  He participated in battles and campaigns in the Western Pacific and Ryukuys Islands, including the battle at Okinawa.  After the War, he returned to Indiana.  He started courting a young waitress and fabulous baker of pies at her family’s restaurant.  He and Marillyn Joyce Ward were married in March of 1946 and celebrated seventy-seven years together.  They built a life filled with adventure, love, and laughter.  Art's devotion to Marillyn was evident in every aspect of their life together, from their travels across the country to the beautiful pieces of art and woodwork he crafted for her.

He worked for Stewart Coach Industries and he and Marillyn managed campgrounds in Florida and Virginia, where they made countless friends and memories. His love of nature and the outdoors was a constant in his life, and he found great joy in sharing that passion with others.

Art's creativity knew no bounds, and his talents as a gifted painter and woodworker were admired by all who had the pleasure of experiencing his work.

Art's commitment to service extended well beyond his time in the military, as he volunteered at Fairchild Tropical Gardens for 30 years and at the Florida City visitor center. His love for his community and the natural world was evident in the countless hours he dedicated to these organizations.

Art is survived by his wife of 77 years – Marillyn Hagerty of Munising; their sons – Thomas Hagerty and William “Bill” (Kim Buell) Hagerty; and grandsons – William and Matthew.  He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Esther (Zigler) Hagerty and sister Miriam Irelan.

Art was a handy, interesting, and creative individual, always looking for ways to bring joy and beauty to the world around him. His love for his family, his passion for his work, and his commitment to his community will forever be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and service.

No public services will be held, and interment will be at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bristol, IN.
