Douglas A. Gould, age 75, of Shingleton, died unexpectedly, Friday, May 21, 2021 at his son’s family home surrounded by his family.  He was born on May 19, 1946 in Munising to the late Joseph and Marie (Monroe) Gould.  Doug graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1964 and then attended Northern Michigan University for three years studying to become a teacher.  While at school he worked full time at the Red Owl.  Doug was drafted into the United States Army and became a squad leader in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam.  When he returned stateside Doug was an Advanced Jungle Training instructor at Fort Polk.  He was honorably discharged in 1969 as a Sergeant (T) and was awarded National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 devices, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Valorous Unit Award.  Doug returned home and started working back at Red Owl.  Following his time serving in the military, Doug met up with an old childhood friend Merrian “Jeannie” Arball.  Doug took her ice fishing on their first date and must have figured she was tough enough to marry.  Doug and Jeannie were married on June 15, 1974 at Eden Lutheran Church, and together they raised their two children.  Doug worked for over forty-five years in the grocery industry and took great pride in everything he did.  Quality and presentation of the meat was always important and when you walked down his produce aisle you felt like you were in a garden.

Doug spent a lot of time on side projects when he was away from work.  He and his father-in-law Jack ran J&D Fur Farm, raising foxes for many years. Another hobby venture was Prairie Creek Kennel, where Doug would breed, raise and train beagles to compete in field trials. After retiring from Glenn’s in 2009, Doug thought he would raise a couple chickens for eggs. Those chickens quickly turned into one hundred as his interest in hobbies was always passionate.  Doug was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish.  He looked forward to trips on Lake Michigan catching King Salmon and fishing for bass on Cowell Lake where he learned to fish as a child.  He also loved running his trap line, where coyotes were his targeted animal.  Doug had great respect for the animals and appreciated their intelligence and ability to survive.  He knew he had to do everything right to be successful and he strived to be meticulous.  The only thing that would get Doug out of the woods were the Green Bay Packers.  He loved cheering on the Green and Gold and would shush the room if even a commercial or news story was on about his team.

Doug is survived by his wife of forty-seven years Jeannie Gould of Shingleton; children – Travis (Malana) Gould of Shingleton and Kristie (Sean) Jamieson of Gaylord, MI; grandchildren – Carter, Cole, Logan, Layla, Wyatt, and Gauge Gould and Jack and Ryan Jamieson; brothers – Larry (Connie), Tom, and Todd (Melissa) Gould; brother-in-law – Ron Bell; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents – Joe and Marie; sister – Iris Bell, infant brother – Daryl, nephew --Dylan Gould; niece - Melissa Syers; and sister-in-law – Pam Gould.
