Fred Bark, age 85, of AuTrain Lake, died Friday, September 11, 2020 at Medilodge of Munising.  He was born on August 4, 1935 in St. Clair, Michigan to the late Cyril and Virginia (Stojanovich) Bark.  In 1945, his family moved to AuTrain, and began building the Bark Resort.  In 1950, the Bark Sawmill was opened, and Fred worked along side with his father and later his younger brother Bob making cedar log siding that was shipped all over the UP and Midwest.  Fred loved the woods and was an avid hunter, fisher, and trapper.  Much of his success in the woods came from self-teachings and learning from the land.  These skills were something he loved to share and teach his brother.  Although the cabins from the resort were sold in the late 70’s Fred continued to live in the home on AuTrain Lake.  Fred became a 24 hour a day caregiver to his mother in her later years.  He learned to cook from watching Emeril Lagasse and other T.V. chefs.  He began cooking complex meals, trying new things, and baking, all things he really began to enjoy.  As Fred got older and needed some extra help around his home, Commission on Aging became a pivotal part of his life.  Tracy Brown, Chris Lindquist, and all the C.O.A staff and volunteers gave Fred the ability to continue to live at his home.  This freedom was greatly appreciated by Fred and his family.

He is survived by his brother Bob (Linda Rockwell) Bark of Jackson, Linda’s son Mike Rockwell, cousins Nancy (Denny) Arnold and Dave Blanchard.  Fred was preceded in death by parents Cyril and Virginia.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery in St. Clair.
