Gary Holbert, age 64, of Wetmore, Michigan passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at his home with his family by his side, assisted by North Woods Hospice.  Gary was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, one of six children, and graduated from Sylvania (Ohio) High School in 1971.  He enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school.  Gary was a Para-Rescue during his six months in Viet-Nam for which he received a commendation for valor.  Later, he was a Nuclear Weapons Specialist out of KI Sawyer AFB.  Gary left the USAF after seven years and was a Staff Sergeant.   After the Air Force, Gary worked briefly as a computer system installer for the City of Marquette.  He then joined the staff at Marquette Branch Prison as an officer for the next seven years.  He transferred to Camp Cusino as an officer and then as a crew foreman.  Gary retired in 2004.  After thirty years in Marquette, Gary and his wife moved to a small inland lake south of Munising, Michigan.  There, Gary enjoyed the lake and woods, hunting, and cooking for friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years – Pamela Holbert; his children – Joshua (Robin) Holbert of Baraboo, WI, Brooke (John) Anderson of Marquette, and Dean (Sherri Esslinger) Holbert of Wausau, WI; his mother – Barbara Holbert of Knoxville, TN; brothers – Chuck (Kim) Holbert and Brandon Holbert all of Knoxville, TN; sisters – Shirley Holbert of Decatur, AL and Linda Holbert of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren – Haley and Ethan Anderson; and a large extended family.

Services will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday, September 16, 2016.  Visiting time will be from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Gary’s memorial service will be at 7:00 p.m. conducted by his dear friend EveAnna Davis, where there will be opportunity for family and friends to share stories and remembrances.   Honorary escorts will be Geno Wachter, Brad Merritt, Lee Mason, Eddy Juranek, EveAnna Davis, and Kip Cota.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude’s for Children or the Alger Food Pantry.
