Gordon Clifford Nelson, age 85, of Au Train passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at MediLodge of Munising. He was born in Munising in 1934 to Henry and Hannah (Kallioinen) Nelson. After graduating high school in 1952, Gordy began college at Michigan Tech. Unsure of the direction to follow in college, Gordy went into the Army from 1954 to 1956, serving in Germany. Upon his return home, he began his training at Michigan Tech for mechanical engineering. In 1957, while vising his brother in Rapid River MI, Gordy met Deanna Lundquist. As Gordy tells the story, he “rescued her from the cedar swamp” and they were married in 1958. Gordon graduated from Michigan Tech and they settled in Rockford, Illinois and lived briefly in Connecticut and Appleton, Wisconsin before moving to Munising in 1969. Gordy worked at the Kimberly Clark paper mill where he eventually became manager of the engineering department. He enjoyed his work but was happy to retire to Au Train Lake in 1994. Gordy was a member of the American Legion and Sion Lutheran Church. Throughout his life, he loved hunting, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling. Never bored, he always found projects to keep him busy. Woodworking was a Nelson family tradition and he spent time making furniture for his daughters, games for his grandson, and even building his own sauna. In the winters, he and Deanna relaxed in Florida or Arizona.  Gordy had a great sense of humor, which was appreciated by his family and friends.

Gordy is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Deanna; their daughters: Lori Nelson of Marquette, MI, Amy Nelson of Stevensville, MI, and Mara (Jason) Snedeker of Sherwood, WI; grandson: Andrew Snedeker; brother: David Nelson of Munising, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ray and Ralph Nelson, and his sister Caroline Nelson.

A Memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.  As he was a long-time member, donations can be made to The American Legion Post 131 or Sion Lutheran Church.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of MediLodge of Munising for their excellent and compassionate care.
