Obituary

Dorothy Jeanne Marie Chartier, who was known to all as Jeanne, died  peacefully at her home in Munising on Thursday, March 16, 2023 under the loving care of her family and North Woods Hospice following a prolonged illness.  She was 98 year old and survived by her seven children – Greg, Chris, Theresa, Mary, Mike, Dan, and Diane, fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and extended family.  Jeanne was born on December 2, 1924 to parents Abraham and Edith (St. Peter) Artibee of Munising who owned and managed the General Store once located on East Superior Street.  Jeanne attended Mather High School, excelling in academic study and sharing her love of music and arts as a member of the drama and glee clubs.

Graduating in 1942 with high honors, Jeanne moved to Illinois where she entered the St. Joseph School of Nursing and became certified as a Registered Nurse.  She then returned to Munising and was appointed to the position of County Health Nurse where she, along with other medical professionals headed the polio drive for Alger County.

Following a three-year courtship, Jeanne and Benedict Chartier of Brown’s Addition were married on September 9, 1953.  They were able to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary before Ben passed away in July of 2008.

Jeanne and Ben shared a deep religious conviction and faithful practice to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and His Blessed Mother Mary.  To her children, she was affectionately known as the “Little Colonel”  managing her home and large family with fair discipline and great love.  Jeanne filled her life with her children and family and interests that included gardening, reading, collecting rocks in her travels for her flower gardens, collecting coins, and being a voice in business and politics as a member of the Michigan BPW (Business and Professional Women) to support women and the issues facing them in changing times.

She is recognized by her family as a true matriarch and prayer warrior who never failed in richly blessing everyone she supported by prayer and action throughout her lifetime.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church on Monday, July 3, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.

God Bless and keep you close, Mom.

We love you and thank you for all you’ve given us.

They count as treasures we will cherish forever.”
