Joan “Joanie” Schumann, age 76, of Boyne City, died unexpectedly and peacefully on September 30, 2021 in Munising, Michigan while traveling across the U.P. with her husband Bill.  She was born on November 11, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas, the first of eight children to Joseph and Mary (Vader) McNamara.  Joanie met Bill Schumann in the summer of 1964 and they were married on June 19, 1965 in Park Ridge, Illinois. Together they raised two wonderful children, Craig and Lisa and several dogs that she loved dearly. Joanie and Bill made Boyne City their home twenty-one years ago, and made an amazing network of friends mostly due to Joanie’s outgoing personality.  Joanie had an unbelievable zest for life, compassion for others, and kindness that made everyone feel loved and welcomed.  She loved traveling, painting, photography, golfing with the ladies’ golf group and playing cards with her poker group, “The Pokettes”.  Joanie was a talented artist and painted landscapes inspired by her travels.  She gathered many pictures from her trips and never missed an opportunity to take a photo.  Joanie’s generosity to those around her was easy to see.  She gave countless hours of her time volunteering for many organizations including: Boyne Eta Nu Charities, Boyne City High School Drama Department, Charlevoix Humane Society, and McClaren Northern Michigan Hospital.  Joanie had a positive impact on everyone she met and served with her incredibly outgoing personality and care.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-six years – Bill Schumann of Boyne City, MI; children – Craig (Missy) Schumann of Seattle, WA and Lisa Schumann of Phoenix, AZ; siblings – Maureen McNamara, Kathy (Bill) McLoughlin, Pat (Barb) McNamara, Joe (Barb) McNamara, Mike (Christi) McNamara, Jim (Lisa) McNamara, and Tim McNamara; brother-in-law – Jim Schumann; numerous nieces and nephews; and several grand-dogs.  Joanie was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Mary.
