Michael Jay Shuman, 68, of Au Train, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at his home under the loving care of his family and staff from North Woods Home Care and Hospice. He died from advanced lung cancer.

A gentle spirit with a great sense of humor, family and friends knew him best as Mike. He spent his life caring for others through social and health care work with an open-mind and a listening ear for those in need.

Mike was born on June 6, 1953, in Detroit to a Jewish-American family, and the late Melvin and Rhoda (Feldman) Shuman. He grew up helping his father run their family business called Mel’s Landscaping in Sterling Heights.

He graduated from Southfield High School in 1971 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Eastern Michigan University. Mike enjoyed studying religion, which included attending and serving with the Marquette Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He enjoyed learning about self-healing methods and served five years at Song of the Morning, a nonprofit yoga retreat in Vanderbilt and managed the Southfield Family Sauna & Tub on Eight Mile Road.

On June 8, 1997, Mike married TiAnn Altiveros in the presence of family in Farmington Hills. In 2008, they moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where he became a private home health and hospice aide. He took great pride in caring for those who needed his help. Mike enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, playing his guitar, writing poetry, and meditation. He also enjoyed long rides and taking in all of the scenery the Upper Peninsula had to offer. Mike was a great father and loved his duties as a dad.

He is survived by his wife, TiAnn Shuman of Au Train; daughter, Melanie Shuman of Ishpeming; stepchildren, Angelique (Sterling) Soenarie Blair of Arizona and Christopher (Kisha) Soenarie of Maryland; grandchildren Noah, Issa, Nevaeh, and Armani; sisters Cindy (Dr. Fred) Weiser of White Lake and Nancy (Larry) Fitzgerald of Las Vegas, Nevada; and many nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and many dear relatives.

The family has chosen to celebrate his life privately. Mike’s final resting place will be at the Machpelah Cemetery Association in Ferndale.
