Samuel Richard Peterson, age 70, of Harvey and formerly of Munising, died at his home under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice on Friday evening, August 25, 2023. Sam was born in Marquette on January 12, 1953 to the late Gail and Carmen (Lark) Peterson. He was raised in Munising and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1971. Sam joined the U.S. Army and served from October 7, 1971 until July 30, 1975. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged. Sam went to school when he returned home and attended Bay College, Ferris State, and NMU. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree and taught diesel mechanics and welding at NMU for nine years. Sam then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service from 1993 until his retirement in 2008. He worked at the Marquette, Negaunee, and Ishpeming Post Offices. Sam married Mary (Marietti) Jarvis on November 17, 2008. He was a member Vietnam Veterans of America, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign War. Sam enjoyed fishing, hunting, and tending his vegetable and flower gardens.
He is survived by his wife – Mary Peterson of Marquette; sons – Damion Corp, Keith (Sarah) Jarvis, and David (Michelle) Jarvis; grandchildren – Brandon Schiefel, Whitleigh Jarvis, William England, Christian Jarvis, Jerrod Jarvis, Jacob England, Payton Corp, Lauryn Corp, Jordan Stookbury, Kenzie Jarvis, Alexa Jarvis, and Jackson Jarvis; great-grandchildren – Heaven, Nevaeh, Addie, Tyler, Ashlynn, and Emma; brothers – Ed (Christina) Peterson of Jackson, Carl (Debbie) Peterson of Marquette, and Tom (Mary) Peterson of East Los Angeles, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Gail and Carmen and his sister, Mary Trumbell.
Services will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Friday, September 1, 2023. The visitation will be from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Pastor Jim Rodgers will conduct Sam’s funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where military honors will be rendered by the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guards.
