Therese Ann (Grondine) Palomaki

September 29, 1929 — May 24, 2023

Munising

Therese Ann Palomaki, age 93, of Munising, went home to be with her Lord and Savior late Wednesday evening, May 24, 2023 at the Munising Memorial Hospital.  She was born on September 29, 1929 in Spalding, Michigan to Wilfred and Albena (Laurin) Grondine.  Growing up and during high school, Therese worked at the post office, grocery store, and theater.  She graduated from Powers-Spalding High School in 1947.  After high school Therese went to work at the hospital in Menominee and that sparked her interest in nursing.  She then attended St. Luke’s Hospital and school and became an L.P.N.  Therese went to work at Bell Memorial Hospital and met Glenn C. Veale.  They were married on February 16, 1952 and together had three children – Steve, Kathy, and Sue.  On August 18, 1958, Glenn was killed in a mining accident leaving Therese with the children at the ages of 5, 3, and 4 ½ months.  Months later, Therese was diagnosed with tuberculosis and became a patient at Morgan Heights.  Her faith and love of the Lord got her through those difficult times.  At Morgan Heights, Therese met Charles “Chuck” Palomaki and after numerous proposals, Therese finally agreed to marry him.  They were married on June 15, 1961.  Raising their family together, Chuck and Therese grew their family by adopting their sons Tim and Scott.  Therese was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church where she was a Eucharistic minister, a religious education teacher, lector, and a member of St Anthony Guild and St. Joseph Circle.  Together, she and Chuck were Pre-Cana marriage sponsors for many couples and they would bring communion and visit with shut-ins.  Therese was also an officer and member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters.  On November 7, 1977, she was active with opening up the St. Vincent De Paul Society in Munising and served as a volunteer there until the Munising store closed. Therese worked for the Marquette Alger School District where she worked with the handicapped children for two years.   She also worked at Denman’s Department Store as a clerk.  Therese was devoted to her morning and evening prayers for her family, friends, and to anyone who needed prayers going down her daily list.  She enjoyed sewing, knitting, playing 500 with the Lady Foresters, and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a Cub Scout leader.   She and Chuck enjoyed traveling – especially their trip to Hawaii, playing cribbage, and square dancing.  They were married over fifty-four years when Chuck preceded her in death on February 3, 2016.

Therese is survived by her children – Steve (Cindy) Veale of Williamsburg, VA, Kathy Veale of Wetmore, Sue (Wayne Young) Burton of Marquette, Tim (Susie) Palomaki of Munising, and Scott (Amy) Palomaki of Traverse City, MI; grandchildren – Nikki, B.J. (Meredith), Janelle (Justin), Derek, Lucas, Cimantha, Greg, Christy (Jim), Hannah, Jacob, Joshua, Joseph, Rebekah, Paige, and Sydney; seven great-grandchildren – Jaiden, Jocelyn, Aria, Drake, Brandt, Elena, and Vivian; brother – Joseph Grondine of Escanaba, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Glenn Veale, husband Chuck Palomaki, infant sons John and William Palomaki, grandsons Jamie and Jonathon, and siblings Marie, Lucille, Henry “Hank”, Harry, Irene, Wilfred, and Phyllis.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday, June 1, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. beginning with the rosary being recited at 5:00 p.m.   Therese’s Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Munising on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 12:00 noon. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.  An American Legion Auxiliary service will begin at 1:00 p.m. and Father Michael Ocran will conclude with committal prayers.
